Additional 12.5 km of lines of rail on Maasvlakte
ProRail is cooperating with the Port of Rotterdam on the realisation of the project “Maasvlakte 2”. The Port Authority paid for the construction of the railway line, while ProRail was responsible for the review of the design and supervision of the implementation. The line will be operated by ProRail and Keyrail in future.
Just behind the dunes is the new connection to the Euromax terminal, one of the most advanced and environmentally friendly container terminals in the world, specifically designed for fast, safe and efficient handling of large container ships. The tracks of the current Maasvlakte line terminate near Rail Terminal West of ECT and the emplacement of Maasvlakte West.
On Maasvlakte 2, the large terminals will soon start and end of the container trains throughout Europe drive. On the 160 km long Betuweroute, 160 freight trains can run daily to the German border, ready for further transport in Europe. Currently, approximately 9% of all goods come or leave the port by rail. It is estimated that this will eventually more than doubled to approximately 20%. Maasvlakte 2 shall be completed in 2013.
