Official inauguration of second bridge across the Rhine

One further important part of the railway infrastructure on the Corridor Rotterdam-Genoa was completed. On 22 October 2012, the second bridge over the river Rhine near Basel/Switzerland was officially inaugurated by representatives of Swiss cantonal and federal authorities as well as SBB and Deutsche Bahn. The bridge will bring more capacity, punctuality and more silence, thanks to noise protection.

The new 240 meter long and 47 million euro expensive concrete bridge spans the river near the two already existing steel bridges. After three years of construction works, the first track was taken into service on 10 October 2012. The second track will be operational at the beginning of November.

After the completion of access roads and the restoration of the double-track steel bridge, trains will be able to use all four tracks across the Rhine from the year 2017 onwards. This provides much needed additional capacity for rail freight via NRLA (Rail Link through the Alps) and is a prerequisite for the development of cross-border S-Bahn traffic.
