Re-opening of Gotthard line on 2 July 2012

Just two weeks after the successful blasting of rocks at the site of the rockslide near Gurtnellen, the repair works on the Gotthard line could be completed as scheduled on 2 July 2012. After checking the repaired line section for deficiencies in the construction, first freight trains were able to pass the Gotthard line in the evening. Passenger trains ran on 3 July. Freight as well as passenger services are expected to again run smoothly by the end of the week.

The timely reopening of this important transit route was only possible thanks to the extraordinary performance by all people involved. Numerous employees of SBB were engaged in the repair works, organised alternative routing for freight as well as passenger services, offered customer service information and much more. Only perfect team work enabled SBB to master this difficult situation. Despite the closure of the line for several weeks, it had been possible for SBB and the concerned railway undertakings to conduct many freight transports on rail after all.
