Update RFI Alert: Suspension of the freight traffic repealed
"We’re glad to announce that, in the measure that the weather and traffic conditions will allow it, RFI will let all the programmed freight trains run. Under the overall coordination of RFI central Unit, the traffic replanning will be made in the regional operational units which all the Italian RUs have been warmely invited to attend."
Alert Message from RFI (Italy) related to severe weather conditions in Italy:
“We regret to announce that, due to the extremely severe weather alert, the CRISIS UNIT has been activated and different measures planned. In order to limit the trouble and the critical situations all around the network, jointly with the Civil Protection, it has been decided that as far as the passenger-trains are concerned, delays, variations and - for the high emergency cases – also the service cut are foreseen. With regard to FREIGHT TRAFFIC, from tonight at 02:00 a.m., it will be temporarily suspended. At the time being, the temporary suspension for the freight traffic is expected to last for 24-48 hours”.
With the opening of the Gotthard Basis Tunnel (GBT) by the end of 2016, journey time for crossing the Alps via rail could be reduced significantly. This will be enhanced after finishing the Ceneri Base Tunnel (CBT) and the construction works up front and behind the GBT from 2021.
In the meantime, SBB Infra together with RFI and DB Netz AG set up a pilot to offer, for TT 2019, international pre-constructed paths with very competitive journey times on the routing from the Cologne to the Milan area.
We would like to invite you to take a look at our offer, which we have published today in the Pre-arranged Path (PaP) catalogue for the timetable 2019; individual PaPs are published in PCS Next Generation under the following link: https://pcs-online.rne.eu/
You can also download the path catalogue from our download section as well as all relevant information about booking and allocation conditions at the Corridor Information Document (CID) book IV (also available in our Customer Information Platform (CIP)).
Due to the derailment of a freight train between Brenner and Steinach (among Gries and St. Jodok) on the evening of 22 December, the line is currently completely closed. Due to the winter weather conditions (frost) and the location of the accident site in an inaccessible area, the repair work is difficult and takes longer than originally forecast. The removal of the accident site and the reconstruction of the line can only be carried out by rail. Work is running 7/24 and the re-construction works of the track (2.500m) and the catenary startetd yesterday and are progressing well.
