The Sector Statement and Ministerial Declaration to boost international rail freight have been offically signed by the Ministries of the member states during the TEN-T Days in Rotterdam.
RFC Rhine Alpine very much appreciates the effort of the ministries and all sector organisations and their commitment shown through both documents.
Happy Birthday Gotthard Tunnel!
RFC RALP congratulates SBB on the opening of the Gotthard Tunnel! Best wishes for prospering European rail freight traffic on this new transalpine link for all stakeholders!
Railway freight transport through the Alps increased in 2015 for the fourth time in a row: The volume of goods transported by rail freight grew by 3.3%. The market share of rail increased from 67.3 to 69%. This is shown in a report published by the Federal Bureau for Transport (FBT) on Thursday. The decisive factor for this growth would, among others, the improvement of the economic situation in Germany and Italy, the relatively high availability of rail infrastructure and the continuation of the accompanying measures to promote the given modal shift, so the FBT
Exactly at 12.00 o’clock the 21st of January 2016, the break-through in the “West Tube” of the Ceneri Base Tunnel has been reached. After finishing the interior works in summer 2017 the installation of “rail technique” will start. The opening of the 15.4 km long tunnel is foreseen end of 2020. The base tunnel has two single track tubes with a cross connection every 325 meters.
Additional Actions for a better Modal Split „Rail“ for Transalpine Freight Traffic.
The Swiss Federal Council has adopted the relocation report last week. In order to improve the modal split in favor of rail, additional actions have been decided.
The performance related to heavy load tax shall be increased in combination with temporarily lower track access charges for rail beginning 2017.
The modal split in the first semester 2015 has already improved from 66.1 % in 2013 to 68.6 %. The number of trucks that runs on road have been reduced to round about one million from former 1.4 million. So rail freight traffic through Swiss Alps is on a good way. The strong Swiss currency and the low prizes of fuel are challenging rail transport heavily.
Representatives of the „Alp Transit Gotthard Company“, the Ministries and several participants of the project have inaugurated the viaduct “Lugano – Bellinzona” situated at the north portal of the Ceneri-Basetunnel. A spectacular firework has been shown the 15th of December 2015 in order to inform the population about the completion of this viaduct that will be a milestone in the “Alp Transit” project. During Christmas time it will be illuminated. On this 1060 meter long building “Lugano – Bellinzona” the trains will run direction north in future – on the 480 meter long viaduct “Bellinzona – Lugano” the trains will run direction south.
